August 2020 – NQCA

Hello, bonjour, hola, privet, ciao and guten tag to all the clowns across the world, I trust and pray you are all well and are keeping in good health during these trying times.

The WCA has been busy all through the summer, actively encouraging our members and the public to keep smiling, laughing and having fun. Some of you have said it’s not been easy, some have even decided to not put on their red noses ever again. That’s too bad because a red clown nose can instantly create a smile. So pop it on more often and laugh at yourself with friends and family.

National Clown Week was slightly different this year with very few formal events but you all got creative and found ways to bring smiles with car and bike parades and small get together with your clown family. Many used social media and shared pictures, videos and the joys of clowning with everyone around the world. Thank you all who took part.

I shared a friends idea with many of you that everyone should get into makeup at least once a week during this mandatory down time and if you’re not tried it yet, please do. It feels so good to get into makeup and bring some smiles to yourself and those around you. We need to make the world a happier place, and when you have your makeup on it’s time for clowns to shine.

Coming up in October, the WCA executive committee will be having its Mid Term meeting online. This important business meeting is spread over two days and if you have any questions, thoughts or ideas for WCA, please email me@andytheclown.co.uk

Thought of the week, once a clown always a clown. Just because you don’t have your clown shoes on today, it doesn’t mean your not a clown. You’ll always be a clown and welcome to rejoin the best clown organization on the planet, The World Clown Association.

Your friend always,

Andrew Davis WCA President 2019-2021

Hello from rainy Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri!  I am sitting in my garage at this moment trying to decide whether I need to pull everything into my house from my yard sale as the clouds loom low on this little clown spot.
I just read some information about our hotel in North Brook for our March convention and am so very excited and impressed that they have taken some great measures for our health and safety during COVID.  I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to the fun.  I need to brush up on some skills since I have barely worked these last few months.  I sure wish I had some of you here with me, we could jam and perfect our trade.
Have you ever considered how many clown things you have accumulated over the years? Do we need all of that stuff for our trade?  I met a really cool couple today, they were tourists from out of town.  They came to my yard sale and immediately saw the clown pictures on the wall.  WA LA!  I met a fellow clown.  He is a Shriner clown from the city and of course, we had to talk shop.  It became a discussion of why I had so much stuff and how much I didn’t need at this point.  I am selling costuming, accessories, bows, suspenders, tights, ruffles and so much more.  I decided 190 hats and head pieces are just too much, 200 bows really need to be sold and fifty wigs would never get worn.  Because I am in the theater business, they aren’t all clown themed, so my garage if full!  I realized a couple of months ago after being stuck inside that I couldn’t find the things I need due to the crowding of the things I don’t.  It was time to organize.
I am able to open my closets now and actually see things. I am able to open up prop areas and find my favorite items for skits and scripts.  I may need some of those things I sold someday, but that someday hasn’t come in a few years.  I was thrilled to practically give a leather jacket to a local here who lost his family in the big Texas flood disaster a while back.  He looked great in that jacket and I would think it might be hard to smile even now after such a tragedy.  It got me to thinking.  What if I hadn’t known his story?  I wonder sometimes how being a clown can open up smiles to people who haven’t been able to smile for a long time.  I realized today that being a clown is not only one of my greatest pleasures, but so very important to others.  It may not seem that way sometimes , but every person who came into my yard sale today had something to say about clowns and clowning.  There were a great deal of smiles bouncing about, and it made me smile too.

I realize there have been concerns over our safety with everything that has happened in Chicago.  Rest assured we will be far, far away from any of those areas.  Our hotel in Northbrook is approximately 40+ miles from any areas of unrest.

We are excited and moving forward and I for one am so missing seeing all of you!!!  We need our “clown family” FIX!!!  We were cheated out of that in 2020 which is all the more reason why we need this in 2021.  Not to mention some GREAT lecturers that our Educaton Director, Kolinda Zander-Hussey has secured.

Also please know that we are in constant contact with our hotel and the area Visitors Bureau.  Bob Neil and Patti Ummel have been to the hotel and have seen the sanitation and safety processes they have in place.

Please plan NOW to join us in Northbrook, IL in 2021!

See you there!

When we meet online for a ZOOM meeting as WCA officers, we discuss the convention and other issues of WCA but we need some input from our members out there—and you are that link. PLEASE take the time to respond to the following questions with a reply to me at jb@jellybean-clown.com and also to our President, Andy Davis at me@andytheclown.co.uk

  • Are you working now at any clown gigs?
  • Has the market opened up at all as we are in the 6th or 7th month of Covid Quarantine?
  • Please talk to your clown friends and give us some ideas of what, if anything, is stirring in your area.
  • What is the prediction for the holiday season for entertainers in your area? Are your usual company parties moving ahead with something different or working out a way for you to entertain in a socially distant manner?
  • Are events continuing to just cancel?
  • Is your alley creating opportunities (such as drive-by parades or on-line videos) and trying out some new creative ideas?
  • Our WCA convention is scheduled for early March and will probably be the first major clown event of the new year. Are YOU planning to be there?
  • Do you have the finances to attend a convention at this time?
  • What would reassure you about coming to the Chicago area?
  • What classes/performances/competitions would you consider essential to YOU making the investment?
  • What’s your projection for “life” moving forward?
  • Will we have to wait for a vaccine?
  • Will politics settle after the U.S. election?
  • Are you looking for candidates who want the U.S.A. to unify and work on issues together?
  • How about your projection for foreign travel issues as we get many overseas members to our conventions?
  • What about “social unrest” issues plaguing the U.S. and around the world?

WCA Competition Insights Tutorials

A host of experienced WCA clowns are recording videos about all the different areas of WCA competitions that happen at our conventions. Providing great insights and advice from their experiences, they’ll help you know what they experienced and what you can plan on experiencing when you enter a competition.  These have been posted on our WCA Members Forum and also are found at the WCA website (worldclown.com) for your convenience. Each video is about 10 minutes in length.  Enjoy!
