Finding that Favorite Prop

By Aurora “Bebop” Krause

I’ve always thought that putting together a well-developed clown character with a good prop can make for some great fun, both for clown and audience. Although it’s true that clowning in general does not require props. As clowns we should always be ready with some fun interaction using jokes, riddles or a funny exchange with a child or grown-up, that’s easy and no props are required.

However, having a favorite prop that our clown character works with and that allows for creating fun and entertainment is always a good idea. Our favorite prop can be an extension of our character; we learn to use this prop as our tool to make a connection and engage our audience with comedy antics and patter. I’ve found that I look forward to clowning with my favorite prop because it makes clowning fun for me and always allows my audience to join in the fun if they choose to. I always have a fake banana in my pocket that I use as a phone and I also keep a squeaker in my glove. These are two of my favorite props. They provide me with lots a material to work with and allow for some fun interaction with my audience.

Finding that special prop that works well with our clown character is important. We should always keep an eye out for a unique and reliable prop. No matter where we are; toy store, book store, hobby shop, etc. We must notice what sparks our interest, what possibilities do we see with our clown eyes? It’s our creative imagination that allows us to see new ideas and possibilities in almost everything around us. Where our prop comes from is not as important as how we make that prop work for us. In looking for a special prop select one that you can make unique to your character. Consider making whatever you find your ‘signature prop’; a musical instrument, a ball, an improvised magic wand, a hat, a colorful silk, anything that you can make unique to your style of clowning. Work with your prop and discover its entertaining possibilities. It should be easy to work with, something that you know you can add comedy antics to. Make your prop your friend, work with it at home tapping into all its potential and creating patter for making it a well-rounded routine or gag.

A big plus to having that special prop is that you and your prop become one and every time you clown together you may discover that it’s helping you grow. If you’re new to clowning or have been clowning for a while, finding that reliable, favorite prop is always a good idea. Developing a routine with a prop you enjoy working with will not only build your confidence in the routine but also add comfort and fun to your clowning in general.   Your level of comfort when working with your prop allows for silly comedy antics and playful exchange with your audience. It’s these playful moments that your audience, both children and grown-ups alike, will remember most.

Thanks for your comments and input I enjoy hearing from you.
